Following the colourful village of Viscri we continue on to Sighișoara which claims to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. Sighișoara is a walled town also full of colorful homes and shops snugged together up and down cobbled stone roads.
As we only had one day to soak up the town we opted to try the 'Defend the Fortress Exploration Game.' It was a self guided tour that lead us around to several historical stops and required us to solve a puzzle at each one to save the city which made sightseeing more entertaining for the kids.
In the early 12th century Saxon colonist built the settlement and it continued to grow due to the skilled craftsmen. Each group of craftsmen worked together in guilds. During the Medieval age each guild was required to support the church and defend a tower along the wall. Each tower was named after the guild and out of the 14 towers, 9 remain today.
After walking around town we decided to have dinner at the Restaurant Casa Vlad Dracul which houses the room Vlad the Impaler was supposedly born. Painted a muted yellow color and a metal dragon sign hanging from above we step inside and head upstairs to find the most cheesy 'Halloween' decorated room and a man dressed as the count himself lying in a coffin. After the full tourist experience we sat down for a heaping portion of more traditional food. We spent the rest of the evening entertained by Jason’s vampire’dad’ jokes.
