Fortified Churches 🇷🇴

Driving through endless corn fields we made it to Viscri, a remote village and home to ‘one of the most beautiful churches in the world.'  The small village road  is a dirt and gravel path lined with pear and plum trees full of ripe fruit.  The houses that hug the length of the road are each unique and while showing signs of their age display ranges of bright colours.   It is an authentically beautiful village that seems to capture the history of time.  

We reach a cobble stone road which leads us uphill to the white fortified church.  Archaeologist believe the present day church incorporates pieces of an earlier church from the 12th century.  Like many long surviving churches it has suffered fire damage and undergone various restorations and additions.  The double stone surrounding wall was built in the 16th and 17th century.  While the church is of modest size it is considered the clearest example of a fortified church.  

Viscri has a drone ban so Jason decided to run out to Biertan fortified church the next morning but unfortunately it was covered in a heavy fog.
