How could "Euro Trip" be complete without a trip to Bratislava? We had one last stop on our way out of Prague; an old unsightly nuclear bunker ventilation shaft converted by graffiti artists to your friendly neighbourhood R2-D2. Although graffiti is frowned upon in the city the police do not seem to mind the alteration to the vent shaft.
Once we arrived in Bratislava we grabbed a quick lunch at the Bratislava Flagship restaurant. After a quick google search we decided to try the the Cesnakova polievka v bochniku and cesnakovy ciry vyvar s opecenymi soups (also known as the garlic cream soup in a bread bowl and garlic soup with cheese). In addition to a sharing platter which included five sheep cheese pierogi’s and dumplings with cabbage and bacon. The food was excellent but way more than we needed.
Afterwards we set off to explore Bratislava. We only had an afternoon in Slovakia so we were limited on what we could see. The Old Town Hall has a peculiar object embedded in the clock tower. Apparently in 1809 Napoleon became restless and attempted to conquer Bratislava (known as Pressburg at the time) again, breaking a peace treaty signed a few years earlier. One of the cannonballs got stuck in the Old Town Hall tower and remains there to today.
One of the most photographed sites in all of Bratislava is Čumil (aka the Watcher). Čumil along with his friends Schöner Náci and the Napoleon’s Soldier were installed in 1997 a few years after Slovakia gained its independence. They were created by the Slovak sculptor Viktor Hulík while the country was rebuilding its image after communist rule.
The Little Blue Church was built from 1908-1913 in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style (we really need to learn more about architecture to truly appreciate what this means). It was a beautiful little church with a unique interior; unfortunately, we only got to view it through the front gate because it was closed at the time.
Aliens arrived in Bratislava in 1972 and their ship got stuck on top of the Slovak National Uprising Bridge; we’ve all seen Men in Black 👽. You could either take the elevator 95m up to the highest point in the city or take you chances with the alien tractor beam. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to check out the bar on top of the observation deck; perhaps next time.
Anyone get the blog title reference??
